Introduction of the Grandparents who we have Interviewed -
1. Mrs. Vinod Bharadwaj Born in 1938 in a town called Muradabad in Uttar Pradesh. She belonged to as large joint family. She had two sisters and a brother. Their father was the Chief Justice of Allahabad. She belonged to a very wealthy family and had many luxuries most couldn't even dream at that time. Despite this fact, she had a very caring attitude towards everyone including her servants. She was an extremely bright student and wanted to be a military doctor. She became one too for a couple of years and helped the soldiers during the Indo-China War. She also has a PhD in Hindi literature. 2. Mrs. Koshi Kirplani Born in 1950 in a village near Delhi . She also belonged to a huge joint family. She being the smallest child had to do the household chores. She got little time to educate herself. After he marriage, she shifted to state in south India, Tamil Nadu. Her life still remained the same and had to go through a lot of hardships. She shifted to Nigeria for 20 years. She also went to Master Chef India. Despite all the hardships she had to face in her life, she was a very charitable and loving person. During her stay in Nigeria, she held weekly stalls to earn money for the underprivileged children. |

INTRODUCTION OF THE PARENTS WHO WE INTERVIEWED
1. Mr Ashish Karkhanis
He was born in Delhi, the Capital of India. His family shifted to Mumbai. He had severe asthmatic issues yet he managed to overcome them. He is a chess lover and a national level chess player. When he was 10 years old, he ran away from his house to join a state level chess tournament. He was among the topper scorer’s in the SSC examination. He passed with honours in his CA. He is the managing director of Merino Services Pvt Lmt. 2. Mr. Dhananjay Yellurkar He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father being a forest ranger, he had to travel all around the country and had pets ranging from dogs to tigers. He completed his education in Northwestern University in the USA and required assistance ship to be able to pay for his college and had to work menial jobs to pay for the tuition. He came back to India to care for his mother after his father died. He got married and had two kids. He had a heart attack in 2009 and after recovering, he made a vow to be fit and against odds ran the 23 kilometer marathon of Mumbai. He is intending to run a marathon in all the continents and will run one in Antarctica in December 2018. He is a engineer and financial adviser for IDFC Bank. |

1.Important mass media- Newspapers- The Times of India, The Hindu, The Tribune, The Bengali Magazines- Dharmayug, Kalyan Radios. 2. Newspapers and magazines were very affordable to the masses . Radios too weren’t very expensive and hence could be bought by most people. 3. Most of the information was available through books which were available in libraries. 4. Important authors- Munshi Premchand, Jayshankar Prasad, Harivansh Rai Bachhan. 5.Important languages- English, Hindi, Marathi, Urdu. 6. Transfer of information was slow and it took many days to reach from person to person. 7. Letters took a long time while in case of an emergency they used telegrams which were more expensive. 8. Information was tightly monitored. |
1. The difference in wealth created a difference in the speed in which information reached them. 2. They were able to send telegrams more frequently while the less poor had to communicate mainly through letters. 3. The difference in the wealth of the three grandparents reveals how differently they could communicate and how much depth and views they could get in their news. 4. The access to information was highly unequal. 5. The news was often spread verbally and hence it was inaccurate and lacked details. This was the case for the poor sections of society. 6. Some of them used to read books for an hour everyday- before sleeping. While others used to get time to read only during the vacations. |

- Reading remained as the most important source of information as well as entertainment.
- People went to libraries for obtaining their information.
- People read novels as per their schedule

Important mass media were –Newspapers, Magazines, Radios and a new addition to the list was ‘Televisions.’ 2. Television was very expensive and hence affordable by only a few. 3. There was 1 in 10 families which had television. 4. Due to advent of visual media there was an explosion in the entertainment industry. 5. There were colour televisions coming out too, but they were super expensive and hence almost none purchased them. 6. The programmes started coming in black-in-white. 7. National news carriers like Door Darshan became important sources of information. 8. They became more aware of the outside world through various sporting events. 9. The first Asiad Games held in India were during this time and people started buying TVs during this time. 10. Comic books were very famous during this time and they were read more than the usual novels. 11. Well-equipped libraries were very common and people went there only for information. 12. Newspapers hadn’t lost their significance. 13. The cinema industry also developed a lot. |
